Position description

The Corporate Counsel is an integral member of Counsyl’s Legal Department, supporting the operations of the organization. You will partner with colleagues at all levels and work cross-functionally to support the business needs of the company. As Corporate Counsel you will be a solutions-oriented attorney with a basic understanding of the laws, regulations, legal and contractual principles, and intellectual property matters applicable to life sciences companies within the United States. The ideal candidate for this position will be confident and proactive in his or her approach, and concise, clear, and unambiguous in the delivery of legal advice and other communications. The Corporate Counsel must be capable of working both collaboratively and autonomously, as well as comfortable influencing business partners and effective at making decisions.

What you'll do

  • Lead the legal contracting function by supporting colleagues and business partners in contract-related matters; including drafting, reviewing and negotiating customer, vendor, partner, licensing and other agreements customary to a fast-growing diagnostics company
  • Work closely with cross-functional stakeholders to provide thoughtful, appropriate legal and business support,  including helping to manage compliance oversight throughout the contracting process, interpretation of legal documents and practical relationship management advice
  • Continually improve the efficiency and effectiveness of legal support for the entire organization, including assisting in developing and building legal department systems, processes, and tools  
  • Develop substantive expertise in legal matters within his/her areas of responsibility, working closely with other members of the Legal Department to ensure consistency in approach and providing support for areas outside of his/her primary areas of responsibility as needed
  • Coordinate and participate in internal trainings on Legal Department policies and procedures as requested
  • Set appropriate priorities with internal clients and deliver results according to the timelines established
  • Contribute to a collegial atmosphere and help ensure a balanced workload among the members of the department

About you

  • J.D. degree or equivalent; active law license
  • 4-7 years with a combination of law firm and in-house experience preferred
  • Basic working knowledge of laws and regulations governing the diagnostics or healthcare industry preferred
  • Demonstrated experience drafting legal documents
  • Experience working in a business environment with a strong customer service orientation
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, ability to work independently with little supervision, ability to handle heavy workload for multiple clients, team player with strong interpersonal skills
