Position description

As Director of Commercial Learning and Development, you will oversee all aspects of training programs, including registration, enrollment, content development, delivery and evaluation - at HQ and out in the field. This role focuses on the Commercial team (including Sales and Client Services) along with Medical Sales Liaisons, assisting them in acquiring new business by training the team; spearheading all customer-facing training in conjunction with the Product and Marketing teams;  and providing training for other teams at Counsyl as needed. Another primary responsibility will be to lead all key Commercial meetings throughout the year - creating the vision for the meetings, managing the logistics and partnering with the Marketing and Product teams on content. You will manage, coach and develop the Commercial Learning & Development team, prioritizing their workload to best support Counsyl's strategic goals. The Director of CL&D also manages Counsyl's LMS system and mobile sales presentation tools, ensuring we're maximizing the value of these tools with internal and external customers and creating the right balance between self-guided training and instructor led, live training.

What you'll do

  • Implement and refine department strategic plan by aligning key CL&D programs and initiatives to broader organizational goals.  This includes interfacing with stakeholders to communicate the CL&D strategic plan.
  • Determine necessary curricula to support Counsyl’s products and customers’ needs; ensure timely development and delivery of that curricula. Create differentiated, but aligned, curricula for customers, HQ Counsyl employees (including support teams), and Counsyl’s field sales teams
  • Effectively onboard new Counsyl Commercial team members so that they are able to hit the ground running and provide ongoing support as product and market changes occur - including providing metrics to support
  • Understand, lead and give specific direction on the clinical education needs for clinical staff and physicians
  • Incorporate soft skills and personal/leadership development into curriculum for internal customers
  • Partner with Marketing, Commercial team and other teams as appropriate to provide clear FAQs and other patient-facing educational materials that make the patient experience with Counsyl easier.
  • Be accountable for internal and external customer adoption, satisfaction and content retention  resulting in reduced inbound support inquiries
  • Lead cross-functional strategic initiatives to enhance the learning experience at Counsyl, including: Advanced Learning, learning measurement, partnership training, etc.
  • Communicate opportunities for business process improvement to partners across the organization and ensure all SOPs and Job Aids reflect current product, process and teams
  • Monitor service levels and instill operating and quality metrics to assure a positive customer experience with CL&D and value to the organization
  • Personally instruct courses for internal and external customers as needed

About you

  • Drive Training Programs for Content Expertise and Personal Development. Effectively provide content/product specific training to internal and external customers that supports a positive customer experience continuum from the first interaction on.
  • Strong Communicator. Ability to deliver effective training for internal and external customers and coach your team to the same standard.
  • Can Do Attitude and Focus on Getting Stuff Done. Set achievable stretch milestones for the CL&D team and then deliver on them. Increase the CL&D team’s ability to be more proactive than reactive.
  • Builder with Beginner’s Mind. Collaborate with the team to create a compelling, scalable vision for CL&D at Counsyl. Combine established best developed practices for adult learners with the latest innovative solutions in the learning and development space.
  • Track and Measure Continuous Improvement. Institute effective ways to measure the quantity and quality of Counsyl’s CL&D offerings and how they contribute to attaining our strategic goals.
  • Self-Starter and Experienced Coach. Proven track record of taking ideas and running with them and a willingness to drive projects to completion through individual effort and collaboration with broader teams. Excellent coach and mentor who takes pride in successfully developing and retaining team members in the training/learning and development space.


  • A Bachelor's degree in business, training and organization development, healthcare or related field is preferred. Master’s degree or equivalent experience a plus.
  • 10+ years in a marketing/sales training or learning and development role. Experience in the life sciences industry preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of instructional design theory and implementation, and modern training methods and techniques
  • Proven ability to complete full training cycle (assess needs, plan, develop, deliver, monitor, evaluate and improve)
  • Advanced organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple assignments
  • Proven ability to lead by example and foster mentoring relationships
  • Outstanding verbal, written and presentation skills - ability to effectively tailor messages to different audiences
  • Ability to create momentum with external customers and within the organization
  • Alignment to Counsyl’s vision and core values
  • Passion for creating a unique, positive, easy and fun learning experience for all customers
  • Travel as required
